Flying in the cargo hold like a pet: the extreme experiment that proves why we need a Pet-Inclusive alternative

A CEO locks himself in a box in the hold to show why a Pet-Inclusive alternative is needed.

An adult man locked in a transport crate, placed in the cargo hold of an airplane for over three and a half hours.

This is not an abstract provocation, but a real experiment designed to show what thousands of pets experience every year when they are checked in as luggage. A story that has traveled around the world and has been covered by major Italian outlets such as Corriere.it and Tgcom24.

The Matt Meeker Experiment

The protagonist is Matt Meeker, CEO of the airline Bark Air, who decided to experience a trip in the cargo hold firsthand.

Meeker endured a flight of over 3.5 hours on a route between Florida and New York, locked in a transport crate—the same type used for dogs and cats. The goal was clear: to demonstrate how traumatic this experience can be for an animal. At the end of the flight, his statement was unequivocal:

“I don’t know why a person would do this to their pet.”

Why the cargo hold is not a neutral option

Meeker’s experiment brings attention back to a reality that is often underestimated.

For a pet, traveling in the cargo hold means:

  • total isolation

  • loud and continuous noises

  • temperature fluctuations

  • absence of their human

  • high levels of stress and anxiety

Conditions that, for an animal, can turn a journey into a deeply negative experience.

The Bark Air Vision

This extreme gesture is perfectly consistent with Bark Air’s mission:

to create a true Pet-Inclusive alternative, with flights designed for dogs where they can travel in the cabin alongside their humans, surrounded by comfort, care, and safety.

A vision that looks toward the future of Pet Tourism and proves that another way of flying is possible.

The Bauking Perspective

At Bauking, we believe this story perfectly embodies the meaning of our daily commitment:

breaking down barriers, promoting truly Pet-Inclusive tourism, and strongly affirming that pet well-being is not an optional extra, but a priority.

Experiments like this remind us why it is urgent to rethink travel rules and accelerate the change already underway.
