What are cookies?

Cookies are text strings that websites visited by users (cd. Publisher, or “first parties”) or different sites or web servers (cd. “third parties”) place and store within the user's terminal device, so that they are then re-transmitted to the same sites on the next visit. *

What are they used for?

Cookies are used for different purposes: performing computer authentications, monitoring sessions, storing information on specific configurations regarding users accessing the server, storing preferences, or facilitating the use of online content, such as tracking items in a shopping cart or information for filling out a computer form, etc.; but they can also be used to profile the user, i.e., to "observe" their behaviour, for example, in order to send targeted advertising, measure the effectiveness of the advertising message and adopt consequent commercial strategies. In this case, we talk about profiling cookies. *

TECHNICAL COOKIES

These are generally necessary for the proper functioning of the website and to allow navigation; without them, you may not be able to correctly view the pages or use certain services. For example, a technical cookie is essential to keep the user logged in throughout the visit to a website, or to memorise language and display settings, and so on.

They are not used for further purposes and are normally installed directly by the owner or manager of the website.

The user's prior consent is not required for the installation of such cookies.

These cookies are divided into:

  • Essential cookies, strictly necessary for the functioning of the Site. Without the use of these cookies, some parts of the Site would not work. These include, for example, cookies that allow access to protected areas of the Site. These cookies do not collect information for marketing purposes and cannot be deactivated;

  • Session cookies, which are deleted immediately when the browsing browser is closed;

  • Persistent cookies, which – unlike session cookies – remain in the browser for a certain period of time. They are used, for example, to recognise the device that connects to the site, facilitating the user's authentication operations;

  • Analytical cookies, assimilated to technical cookies when used directly by the site manager to collect information, in aggregated form, on the number of users and how they visit the site itself;

  • Functionality cookies, which allow the user to browse based on a series of selected criteria (for example, language, products selected for purchase) in order to improve the service provided to the user.

PROFILING COOKIES

These cookies are designed to profile the user and are used to send advertising messages in line with the preferences expressed by the user during their navigation.

THIRD-PARTY COOKIES

These are generated and managed by parties other than the operator of the website the user is browsing (usually under a contract between the website owner and the third party).

Are analytical cookies technical cookies?

Analytical cookies can be assimilated to technical cookies if used for site optimisation purposes directly by the site owner, who can collect statistical information in an aggregated form on the number of users and how they visit the site.

If, however, the processing of these statistical analyses is entrusted to third parties, the users' data must be previously minimised and cannot be combined with other processing or transmitted to further third parties. Under these conditions, the same rules apply to analytics cookies, regarding disclosure and consent, as provided for technical cookies. *
