In Nepal, during the Tihar festival, there is a celebration that tells of a different—and incredibly powerful—way of experiencing the bond between humans and animals.
It is called Kukur Tihar, and it is the day when dogs become the true protagonists.
What is Kukur Tihar?
Kukur Tihar takes place every year between October and November, as part of Tihar, one of Nepal's most important festivals.
On this day, all dogs are honored without distinction:
🐶 family dogs
🐕 stray dogs
🐾 street dogs
Each one is granted the same value and the same respect.
How the dogs are celebrated
During Kukur Tihar, dogs are:
-
adorned with yellow marigold garlands
-
decorated with a red tika on their forehead
-
fed special meals consisting of meat, eggs, dried fruit, and treats
Every gesture is symbolic.
The tika represents protection and blessing, while the food and garlands express gratitude, recognition, and love.
For one day, the streets are filled with dogs walking among the crowds, receiving affection, attention, and smiles.
They are not invisible.
They are not excluded.
They are celebrated.
A message that goes beyond the festival
Kukur Tihar is not just a folklore tradition.
It is a powerful cultural message: recognizing the value of the relationship between humans and dogs, based on trust, protection, and mutual presence. It reminds us that dogs are not "just" pets, but family members, life companions, and beings worthy of respect.
✨ The Bauking Vision
